RESORT NEWS

There's a New Burger in Town

Shelter Cove Resort on Odell Lake has just opened the Hook & Talon Restaurant, offering PCT hikers another location to take a break from the trail and enjoy a hot, hearty meal.

We can’t wait for the hikers!

Located on the scenic Odell Lake near Willamette Pass, Shelter Cove Resort has long been a favorite rest and resupply location for Pacific Crest Trail section- and thru-hikers. The destination has been the resort’s General Store, an amply-stocked market where PCT hikers can purchase food, beverages and sundries, fetch resupply packages and raid the store’s hiker box. Unfortunately, the only hot, prepared foods the store had to offer hungry hikers were hot dogs and microwave pizzas. This is, until now.

After years of planning, Shelter Cove is happy to announce the opening of the Hook & Talon Restaurant this year. Located in a new building next to the General Store, the new eatery features a covered patio where hikers and campers can chow down on a selection of burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and salads. The restaurant will also be serving up a selection of breakfast dishes and hosting an espresso bar. Here’s a peek of what’s on the menu:

  • The Stinky Burger – Half-pound beef burger with caramelized onions, blue cheese, lettuce and tomato on a grilled brioche bun with an onion ring on top! Served with PCT fresh-cut fries.
  • Hickory-Smoked Pulled Pork – Fresh pulled pork piled on a bun and topped with BBQ sauce. Served with cilantro slaw, house beans and PCT fresh-cut fries.
  • Pacific Crest Trail Dog – Quarter-pound all-beef hot dog served open-face on a hoagie roll, and topped with house-made cowboy beans, shredded cheddar cheese and diced onion.
  • Big Al Pizza – Pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, black olives and red onions over marinara sauce and baked on a fresh pizza shell.

In addition to the regular menu items, the Hook & Talon will also be offering a daily hiker special. “We can’t wait for the hikers!” says Juile Put, manager at Shelter Cove. “We thoroughly enjoy being a stop on PCT hikers’ journeys. They keep us busy, which is great, and we look forward to visiting with them and making new friends.”

If you’re going to be in the Willamette Pass neighborhood on your PCT hike this summer, drop in to Shelter Cove and sample one of the Hook & Talon’s new menu items. (Click on the snaps below to see the full menus.) Summer hours will be 7–10am for breakfast, and 11am–7pm for lunch and dinner. The General Store will continue carrying many of the supplies hikers need to supplement their journeys, including fuel canisters, toiletries, backpacking meals and more. The resort also offers showers, with the price including soap and a clean towel.

Shelter Cove Resort is located approximately 2 miles off the PCT, via a side trail from Pengra Pass (PCT: OR sec. 3, mile 58; Halfmile sec. D10, mile 1904). You can also access the resort via FR-5810 from Willamette Pass on Hwy 58. For more information, visit Shelter Cove Resort.
