TRAIL NEWS

PCTA Opens P3 Applications

The Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) is excited to announce that the 2018 P3 Program is now open and seeking thru-hikers interested in being hiker-influencers for the Pacific Crest Trail. Prospective thru-hikers with photography, writing, video or podcasting skills can now visit the P3 website to apply

P3 (Protect, Preserve, and Promote) is a joint effort between the PCTA and corporate sponsors Osprey and Salomon. Through this program, ten PCT thru-hikers will attempt to hike the entire 2,650-mile PCT. On their journey, P3 Hikers will promote and advocate for the importance of protecting the trail by sharing their experiences through blogs, social media and exclusive reports from the trail.

Stewardship. That’s what makes P3 unique. P3 stands for Protect, Preserve, and Promote. As the PCT becomes more popular, it’s more important than ever for hikers to minimize their impact on the trail, and maximize their positive impact on the PCT community. We’re looking for hikers that want to share their experience, and give back to the trail during their journey. If you think you have what it takes to join P3 – apply today!
— Scott Wilkinson, PCTA director of communications and marketing

The inaugural class of P3 Hikers was selected from more than 75 applicants from throughout the U.S. and internationally. Hiker Heather Diaz reminisced about her 2017 P3 hike, “It was inspiring to hear feedback from people from my home-state of Texas and my friends of color. Over 80 percent of people who camp and 75 percent who hike are white. It can be intimidating to hike when you have never been exposed to camping, backpacking, or hiking. I worried every time I climbed up or down rocks or hiked along a narrow ledge with my backpack. Every day I faced my fears, and I did my best to put one foot in front of the other.”

The Pacific Crest Trail Association is the only nonprofit organization dedicated solely to protecting the entire Pacific Crest Trail through California, Oregon and Washington. The mission of the PCTA is to protect, preserve and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as a world-class experience for hikers and equestrians, and for all the values provided by wild and scenic lands.

Want to pitch in and help repair the PCT in Oregon? Visit PCTA's volunteer page. You don't need any trail-repair experience—they'll teach you all you need to know. It's going to take a lot of work to repair the PCT and other trails following last year's devastating fires, so every pair of helping hand counts!
